New Post #46 Thinking Thursday
Can the big chief in the sky help your golf game?

Hi Friends
Guess who’s back? back again.
Rory’s back, tell a friend

Now this looks like a job for me!
Rory wins again. 3rd time this year in a playoff following his wins at The Players, The Masters.
Then we had the US of A smashing up GB&I in the Walker Cup at the simply magnificent Alister Mackenzie designed Cypress Point.

Good old Red, white and blue !
Will we get revenge in a couple of weeks at Bethpage??
But the biggest story was Gavin TIERNAN being the only player from GB&I winning in he final day singles.
We must be related.
The great Muhammad Ali once said “How can I lose with Allah on my side?

I’m not arguing with him
Jonathan Edwards, (who set the world record for the longest triple jump in 1995 - 30 years ago) was a devout Christian and said
“My faith was pivotal to my success. Believing in something beyond the self can have a hugely beneficial psychological impact, even if the belief is fallacious. It provided a profound sense of reassurance because I took the view that the result was in God’s hands and that God was on my side. It enabled me to block out doubt before I was due to jump”

Pray the lord my soul to keep
So could some spirituality be your greatest psychological weapon?
The short answer is YES! Absolutely.
BUT you have to actually truly "believe” and quite frankly you either believe or you don’t.
Did you know that that a scientific study showed that having a religious faith CUTS all cause mortality by 30% !!
So if it makes you less likely to die early then what can it do for your golf?
This is where our old friend William James (the so called father of modern psychology, often referenced by Dr Bob Rotella) comes in.
He had a term he called “Over-belief”
Which were defined as “beliefs for which one lacks sufficient evidence for or against, but which one is justified in adopting due to their beneficial effects”

William James and his beard
James used that notion himself to embrace belief in religion.
What “Over beliefs” can you develop about your golf game?
Kevin Pietersen the English (ahem, South African) cricketer believed in fate and he believed that freed him up to bat with freedom and inhibition.
I would pay dearly to play golf with freedom and inhibition!

KP was nuts
It could be said that Sports psychology was actually invented as a panacea in place of religious beliefs.
It must be entirely freeing to give up control on outcomes and just leave it to a higher power.
Definitely something to ponder…………………..
The BMW PGA at Wentworth starts today.
Will Rory go back to back? maybe
Will it rain everyday? probably
Will Billy Horschel be more successful than West Ham? definitely

My old man said follow West Ham……………….
Sayonara, until the next time

JT/Jerry Tiernan!!!
