3 is the Magic Number

Hi Friends

Rory, Rory, Rory. We’ve all been there (granted not at Augusta National) A very nice round of golf ruined by a couple of bad swings.

Golf. The sport most likely to make you sad.

Although the last Cricket match I played runs it close.

I travelled all the way down to Dover (about 1 and half hour drive) to play, we fielded first, I didn’t bowl, I dropped an absolute sitter of a catch and then at the end of the oppo’s innings the heavens opened and the rest of the match was rained off. So we didn’t even get to bat.

And on top of that misery, as it was post covid there weren’t any teas provided!!!

Rory should try putting up with that.

As De La Soul said

Three
That's the magic number
Yes, it is
It's the magic number

A 3 is a good score on any golf hole

I’ve been asking our Club Champions, County golfers and Elite players what they believe is the best 3 things for you to improve,

Here is a recap all in one place for your pleasure,

Paul “Jacko” Jackson

Double club champion - one in each hemisphere (North and South)

Hit it further.

Get better at long putts

Get better at short putts

Sion Spencer

Double club Champion - 2 different clubs in Surrey

  • Tempo/swing slow to get control

  • Self Belief/believe you can go low/Read Dr Bob Rotella books

  • Play for something every time you go out

Tudur Evans

13 time Club Champion

Carmarthenshire County Captain

  • I find that handicap players are always trying to hit the ball too hard, they should learn to club up and hit chippy shots to control the ball

  • Get good around the greens, and make your short putts

  • Accuracy off the tee is key as will open up more birdie putts as approach shots will be easier

Tony Adams

Kent County Captain

Club Champion

Course Record holder

Tony and the absolute legend that is Ernie (love you Ernie)

#1 Smash driver everywhere

“and I mean effing everywhere. The easiest way to get longer is hit more drivers and that’s two fold you get more comfortable with it and driver goes further then 3 wood and 3 wood isn’t much straighter anyway. The piece with this you have to find a driver you really like and you have to have to spin it at 2500 revs. Look at the PING charts for your ball speed and your angle of attack. I think thats so important if you are going to live with driver and going to smash it everywhere, get some spin on it”

#2 Get it pin high

“Get it effing pin high, no matter what you have to do, if you have to hit 4 iron and the other is hitting 6 iron - who cares just get it pin high.

This is a outcome expectancy thing, if I hit 20 shots what’s the average. Hit as much club as you need to hit it pin high

#3 If green breaks more than 3% - Miss it on the high side

Anything 3% or more break with Aimpoint, miss it on the high side. If you get it on that downslope too early your fucked. It misses 3 times as much.

My 3 biggest tips for amateurs would be find a stock shot that gets you in play off the tee, golf is so hard, it’s even harder if you are 3 off the tee.

Secondly stay on your lead side from 50 yards and in, I see so often people falling back when hitting pitches, chips and bunker shots in an attempt to get the ball in the air, the club will do all the work if you just strike it properly, being disciplined enough to stay on your lead side and hit down on the ball will get the ball plenty high enough for any shot.

Thirdly, manage expectations, as I’ve said golf is so hard, even the best in the world hit shanks, thins, duffs and shoot in the 80’s and these guys practice for umpteen hours a day. Accepting that golf is brutal and almost impossible to master will go a long way to help amateurs enjoy the game more.

Right now to watch Rosey, smash up Augusta again,

Enjoy the Masters weekend everybody,

Cheers,
