The unfathomable art and skill of Putting

Hi Friends

Just wondering, Does anyone actually like putting?

Sam Snead with the side saddle

As we can see from the last newsletter, Ben Hogan doesn’t even count putting as a fundamental!

But, in terms of our score, the number we write or these days type at the end of the round, the amount of putts we hit accounts for around 50% of our score.

In theory, it should be the easiest place for us to improve our golf scores; we don’t need any particular physical gifts, unlike hitting a 330-yard drive.

Bryson !!

I say this as I tallied up my season end stats last week and there wasn’t a single round of golf I played this season where I didnt have at least one 3 putt.

My Putting stats for the season are below,

Top row is me, Middle row are averages for a Scratch golfer, Bottom row is average across PGA Tour

(PPGIR = Putts per Green in Regulation)

It’s quite obvious from that I need to improve my putting and this was highlighted in the stableford on Sunday, I shot +4 gross, hit 78% of greens but had 37 putts including 3 putting on the just the 4 occasions.

Enough about me and my putting woes.

I've talked about keeping stats before. I got the above from a very easy process I follow post-round that takes me 5 minutes. Add this to a basic spreadsheet, you get the data and can do with it what you will.

I will share how I do this in the near future I call it “SimpleStats” because its, well……….simple.

So will you see me on the practice green more often this winter?

Yes Sir, and that’s a promise.

Bye bye,
