The most important golf stat of them all?

Hi Friends
I would like to start today by saying I told you so………..……..but I can’t, so I wont.
A thrilling ending to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth saw Billy eagle the 2nd play off hole and beat Rory into another 2nd place. I’m afraid in my solipsistic tendencies all I could think about while this was going on, was how sweet it was going to be. To say, I told you all that Rory would come back from his disappointment at the Irish Open and win again.
Well, maybe next week Rory.

The winner Billy Horschel
What is the most important golf stat to track?
If you are going to track just one golf stat it has to be GIR - Greens in Regulation. Improve your GIR and you are guaranteed to shoot lower scores, as demonstrated by the charts below supplied by Arccos.

As the number of GIR you hit moves so does your average score
The good news you don’t need any stat app or software to track this, its very easy and would take you less then 5 mins after each round, then chuck it in a a very basic Excel spreadsheet (does anyone actually use Apple numbers??) and you’ll have a simple method of seeing any trends in this area.
So if you can get about 60% GIR you’ll be a scratch golfer unless you have some very serious putting issues.
How do you hit more greens in regulation, I hear you ask,
Driving
Hit it further
This from current world number 1 - Scottie Scheffler,
"I hit it a lot further, so with that the dispersion gets a little bit wider," he said. "But obviously I was able to take advantage of being able to hit it a little further."
Approach
Take the right club - Remember Tony talking about clubbing up, we don’t hit it as far as we think and we certainly don’t hit it solid every time - build in the tolerance for those factors
Don’t aim at the pin
Again from Scottie,
"I'm almost always aiming slightly away from the pin," he says. "It's a very rare occasion that I'm aiming anywhere near a pin on the short side of the green."
So Improve your GIR, improve your golf - simples.
Talking of Scottie, he has been dominating the last couple of years and currently has double the amount of OWGR points then Rory (https://www.owgr.com/current-world-ranking)
But he is still nowhere near as dominant as Tiger was back in his prime

😲
Hope you get some golf in this week and hopefully not in your waterproofs!
